When do Volunteers leave?
Each site is a little different when it comes to their time of departure. The earliest departure is in June, and the last volunteers leave in mid-August.
How do i book my flight?
There are two ways of doing this. The first option is that you buy your own flight and get reimbursed for it. The second option is that you coordinate with the office and the BVC pays for it. There are pros and cons to both options. Either way, in the end you will not be paying for your flight.
How do i get my visa?
This is site dependent. This is coordinated through the site director in the spring (March-April). Most visa work is done by you, the volunteer, in coordination with the current volunteers and the site director. The visa expense is covered by the BVC.
When do I get my first stipend?
You will receive your first stipend at the start of the month that you will start volunteering, and then near the first of each month thereafter.
What is the BVC Retreat like?
The BVC retreat is a great way to end your time as an undergrad at Saint John’s. It’s also a great way to get to know the other guys volunteering as well as the monastic community. The retreat typically lasts two weeks and includes a mixture of prayer, classes, activities, meals, and free time. The daily schedule during the week is expected to be a full-time commitment. Weekends have more flexibility - more down time, but still a schedule of Prayer, Work, and Meals.
Yes, volunteers are able to volunteer for more than one year. This program is also open to all graduated alumni that missed their opportunity after graduation and still want to participate in the program.
